Glaucoma is a situation where because of the increase in the eye pressure, the nerve behind which carries the signal from retina to the brain starts getting affected. The optic nerve is made up of the one million small nerves, which comes from the retina and the optic nerve carries all these small nerves together to the brain.
Glaucoma are of two types, one is open angle glaucoma and second is close angle of glaucoma. In eye there is a continuous production of an aqueous humour. It is a liquid which nourishes the eye and the cornea and it takes away all the unwanted substance from the eye to the blood. So, whenever the drainage system of this aqueous humour get affected the eye pressure start building up.
In open angle glaucoma the drainage system is open but still the capacity of the drainage system is not efficient. Drainage system is called Trabecular mesh work. The capacity of the drainage system is hampered that's why the eye pressure start building or sometime the aqueous production is more compared to the speed of the drainage. In that case the eye pressure can increase. It affects the small nerves behind on the retina and ultimately small nerves one by one start degenerating and that's when the there is a beginning of the glaucoma. It's a very slow process but it is a irreversible process.
The second is the close angle glaucoma. In close angle glaucoma,s generally the drainage system the trabecular mesh work kind of get closed. There can be multiple reason why it get closed and that's when then suddenly sometime the eye pressure start building and that can present as a eye pain, redness of the eye, seeing coloured halos or headache. This can be an emergency. So for in both the cases it's very important to catch them earliest because as these are irreversible processes if we catch it earlier and start the treatment, progression may slow down and the ultimate which can lead to the blindness can be taken care.
Dr Harsha is trained in glaucoma examination and early detection of the glaucoma. She does the thorough checkup for glaucoma detection like dilated eye checkup, angle checkup (gonioscopy) eye pressure check up and she can advise you if you are in danger or if you are diagnosed with glaucoma and she can give the appropriate treatment for same.
