Squint eye, also known as strabismus or crossed eyes, is a condition that majorly affects an individual in childhood. A person with squint eyes seems to be looking in different directions. In other words, it is a condition in which the eyes do not align properly. One eye turns upwards, inwards, downwards, or outwards, while the other one focuses on one spot. The overall prevalence rate of this condition in India is about 4% to 6%.
Generally its parents or relative who first notice the squint in children. Children will never complain about squint. Parents generally notice something wrong in the eyes, its going in or out, it seen sometimes or its constantly there. Early detection of squint is important, as it can hamper the vision development and 3D vision development in children.
Sometime only spectacle correction can control the squint, many time Surgical intervention is required to correct the squint.
Squint can be seen in elderly too. It can be present from childhood or sometime it can happen because of nerve paralysis. Even these can be corrected with surgery.
Minor squint sometimes are not noticeable. In that case patient may complaint blurring of vision, headache & eye strain.
